GNSS Monitoring Stations deployed at 7 major Romanian airports
Our colleagues have completed the installation of GNSS monitoring and interference detection stations at 7 major airports in Romania and their initial commissioning phase has begun. For each airport, the role of the stations is to provide the local Air Navigation Services Provider with GNSS performance reports and real-time alerts about any issues that could affect the GNSS-based operations: interference, jamming, spoofing or GNSS signal degradation.
Each station consists of three segments:
- a Server Segment generating the GNSS performance reports and remotely connecting the real-time monitoring UI to the user’s infrastructure.
- a Signal In Space Segment monitoring receiver, logging data from the GNSS core constellations and EGNOS;
- an Interference Detection Segment consisting of four spectrum analyzers, monitoring the GNSS relevant bands, for the detection of interference events and the localization of their sources;

The deployment of GNSS monitoring and interference detection stations is an important activity of the ECHO project. The objective of the project is the implementation of a pilot GNSS monitoring system at seven airports in Romania, for GNSS signal quality analysis and performance evaluation and for detection and characterization of RF interference. The ECHO network currently includes the following airports: Bucharest, Constanța, Timișoara, Craiova, Bacău, Suceava and Maramures (Baia Mare).
The pilot project is financed through the ESA NAVISP Element 3 programme. The contract implementation consortium is led by RISE as a prime and has the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) and the Romanian Air Traffic Services Administration (ROMATSA) as subcontractors.
